5 myths about graphic design and designers
Graphic design today is one of the key components of communication that creates an attractive design and gives meaning to any story. But despite the importance of this area, graphic designers do not always understand their role.
Graphic designer myths can be found all the time, but today we’ll talk about the 5 most common ones.
1. Writing is not your job
If you are a designer, you should not stray too far from copywriters and editors: you are responsible for the final appearance of the text on the page. Your design should complement the story written by the copywriter, so you need to read the entire text, properly compose and layout it. You must make the message on the page as clear as possible, which is achievable only by working in tandem with a copywriter and with the text yourself.
2. Always be in trend!
A new direction in design can inspire and throw great ideas. But creating all of your work based solely on trends can lead you to a dead end.
The best thing you can do is be inspired by something new, come up with a design in your own style and add only a little bit of modern innovation. Best design projects ask trends, and do not “dive” into them headlong, becoming like two peas in a pod on other “trend” projects.
3. You should always come up with something new.
The pressure is extremely bad for graphic designers who are required to come up with something new and incredibly cool every time. Clients raise the bar of expectations every time, focusing on the modern designs of their competitors and other projects, wanting to keep up and maintain leadership positions at the forefront of the design trend.
Gradually updating the project, introducing new functions and capabilities into it in accordance with new technologies is good, but if you do it only because of the client’s desire to “keep up” – a disaster can happen.
You will have to forget about inspiration and focus solely on finding new solutions that will take the client to a leading position.
Do not forget that you are a designer first, so practice new approaches to design, learn new programs, try to improve a project that has already been completed. Sometimes these actions lead to new ideas that can be used in the next project.
4. Fear Comic Sans like the plague!
Some designers have taken their hatred of Comic Sans to the extreme by severely criticizing anyone who dares to use it in their work.
In general, this font was first developed for use in the “clouds of dialogue” characters in a comic book. Since then, they began to use it uncontrollably wherever the customer asks for an “original” font. Of course, this font with its style is not applicable everywhere, especially in the printing industry, but sometimes it can be used.
Today, many veteran designers choose Comic Sans for conveying “casual” style in their projects, as well as for displaying dialogues in illustrations. Therefore, you should not write off the font: yes, it is very specific, but it can be used.
5. Graphic design is just decoration
The profession of “designer” is becoming more and more common, but there is no clear understanding of what a graphic designer does. Many people believe that the main task of a designer is “to make it beautiful”: to take ordinary text, add pictures and embellishments to it. But this is very far from the truth.
In fact, designers believe that the form should depend on the function it performs – effectively communicating the message to the readers. Therefore, their goal is to create a beautiful and functional design, which requires a lot of skills and skills accumulated over the years.
Keep in mind that in every industry you can find myths that do not cease to live among the professionals in the industry. Along with designers, non-designers continue to support a myriad of myths about creative people burdened with limitless creativity. Therefore, the next time you take on another project, remember: the possibilities of design are endless, and all the myths that you have heard are the standard costs that are in any profession.
